True Religion had the horseshoe and the thick stitching. Baby Phat had the cat, the pink and Kimora Lee Simmons. Both were everywhere in about 2003. Their first collection together goes on sale on Tuesday.
The campaign
It’s not a throwback. It’s the real thing.
Kimora Lee Simmons, via Sourcing Journal
It stars Aniya Harvey and Kayda Bosse from the eighth season of Love Island USA. It’s called “Making the Campaign”, a send-up of MTV’s Making the Video, shot in a Beverly Hills mansion as a mock reality show with confessionals and fit checks. The running joke is low-rise jeans.
Putting reality stars in it is a sensible choice. People who wore this the first time will recognise the clothes, and younger buyers know the faces.
The clothes
- Bottoms: all low-rise, including bootcut, flared and baggy jeans, sweatpants and a micro skirt of about ten inches
- Tops and jackets: baby tees, satin bombers, zip jackets, vests and puffers in denim and pink
- Details: crystals, fur trims and hot pink stitching and hardware
The pieces I’d look at first are the airbrushed baggy jean, the shrunken satin bomber and the denim fur mini with a halter top.
Harvey told Sourcing Journal she gravitates towards the baggy low-rise jeans. Simmons said: “It’s not a throwback. It’s the real thing.”
When
On sale Tuesday 27 October at TrueReligion.com and BabyPhat.com. Sourcing Journal reports a seated runway show in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, the same day. Prices haven’t been published.
Our view
This one has the advantage of coming from the original labels, so the details are right. The airbrushed baggy jean is the piece I expect to sell out first.
